Biotech is poised to break through the glass ceiling. Too often, the most accomplished researchers find themselves boxed out because they can’t afford to buy equipment, they can’t access the labs they need, or because they have to give up equity before their concept has even had time to take shape. This is the situation at BADASS Labs, and we’re not going to stand for it anymore.
The current lab space ecosystem isn’t built to nurture the brightest young scientific thinkers, and it never will be. It doesn’t take a genius level researcher to see that this model isn’t working.
Many early-stage biotech and climate tech entrepreneurs have spent years developing their craft and expertise, only to find that the resources available in these sectors are woefully inadequate. If you’re looking to take your ideas to the next level, there simply aren’t enough cutting edge labs, state-of-the-art equipment or early stage investors to support you.
You can either give up equity, you can give up IP, or you’re stuck in a non-profit space waiting on the side-lines. Our founder, Dr. David Kiewlich, spent 18 months looking for the right lab to launch his company.
This is not a new problem in the biotech world, but this is not an insurmountable one. We know there is a way to make this problem disappear.
We created BADASS Labs (Bay Area Disruptor And Startup Support Labs) to empower a new generation of scientific rebels and bio-innovators to pursue their dreams of solving problems with science, while also being part of an equally bold incubation community.
As the #1 nonprofit biotech incubator, we empower these fearless, bold bio-innovators to break all traditional barriers to entry in the industry:
- We take no equity or IP in our companies. The only thing BADASS Labs wants is for you to go do great science in service of humanity.
- We are a nonprofit, 501(c)(3) organization. We don’t need to give anyone a profit. All of our resources are focused on supporting our community of scientists.
- We have state-of-the-art labs that are comparable to the most prestigious research institutions. We have instrumentation for cell therapy, gene therapy, oncology, AAV manufacturing, sustainable bio-manufacturing and more.
- We offer 24/7 unrestricted access to our labs and equipment. You can work whenever and wherever you need to.
- We have flexible terms that include a flat fee model (flat rate) and all support services included in the fee. There’s no forced graduation. We’re here for you as long as you need us.
- We offer support beyond the bench, from securing funding to making presentations and to investor outreach, regulatory navigation, and commercialization.
Proven Results, A Shared Vision: Success for All
Success isn’t just a hope; it’s a statistic. While the norm for a biotech startup landing on its feet is roughly 10%, a BADASS Labs company achieves that in 89-95% of cases.
Our collective membership has brought in more than $900 million.
Our approach is this: Succeed or learn. There is no fail. We’re building companies, we’re building a future, and that’s the goal. We build on the back of cell therapy, we build on the back of battery materials, we build on the back of carbon capture. We build a community of underrepresented communities in biotech.
FAQs
How do BADASS Labs differ from other incubators?
We’re a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that takes no equity and has no IP claims. We don’t have forced timelines for graduation. Our 24/7 access to world-class lab space and equipment is open, unrestricted and unlimited. We offer flexible terms. We have a flat-fee, not a percentage-based pricing model.
The key differentiator to us is that we’re not taking your time, equity or intellectual property. We’re just here for you and your scientific innovation.
Do you only do business with biotech companies?
We are a biotech incubator but we also do climate tech and sustainability work. We’re very focused on sustainability. We build on the back of battery materials, we build on the back of carbon capture. We build a community of people who work on bio-manufacturing of sustainable materials.
What equipment is available at BADASS Labs?
We have the highest end instruments you will find in a university research institute. We’re talking cell therapy, gene therapy, we’re talking oncology. We do advanced manufacturing. We have all equipment that’s in a shared laboratory where it’s 24/7 open, unrestricted and unlimited access.
If you start your company at BADASS Labs, how long can you stay there?
We’re very flexible on that. We have a minimum stay of three months, and it doesn’t expire. We have a flat rate, not a growing pricing model.
When it’s time for you to grow up, you leave here and there’s no forced graduation from here to another incubator. That’s what a lot of incubators force you to do, and we don’t. When your company needs 5 years to scale here, you have it here. You don’t have to move.
Does BADASS Labs work with any specific groups of entrepreneurs?
BADASS Labs believes in underrepresented communities in biotech. So we’re really trying to build those people into an ecosystem. We have people of color. We have queer scientists.
We believe that innovation is not going to come from any particular part of society. We believe it comes from all of them.
